Who is she?

WHAT IS YOUR PRACTICE?

My practice focuses on the negative portrayals of Pinay women from the influence of film, media, advertisement, and colonisation. Throughout my practice, I have created a body of work from acrylic to watercolour paintings that have been interconnected through self-portraiture. The compositions have varied due to what false stereotypes I have been researching, such as the archetype of the Dragon lady and her counterpart, the Lotus blossom.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

This issue is significant to me as these false stereotypes have subliminally been informed throughout my life to the extent they had disrupted my journey to find my identity as a Pinay woman. With the aid of my practice, I wish to confront these false identities of Filipina women that have been structured by colonisation and hope to establish my self-identity.

WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO REACH?

I believe it is significant to reach out and console Pinay women and better yet, Asian women, to make them feel seen and heard. One of my long-term goals is to make their feelings validated over the issue and empower them to gain control over their own identity and even rewrite the wrongs that have been instilled through media, film and advertisements.
